What Do I Need to Sell a Gun? Bring List for Cumming, GA

To sell a gun to our Cumming shop, bring a photo ID and the gun, unloaded. Here is the full list, what else helps, and what to know before you leave home.

Pre-owned glass case with revolvers, a framed document and pistols on three shelves

To sell a gun to our shop in Cumming, you need two things: a photo ID and the gun, unloaded. That is the whole requirement. You do not need to fill anything out ahead of time, and you do not need a license or permit of your own.

A few other things make the visit faster and can help your number. This post lists all of them, so you know what to pack before you drive over.

What do you need to sell a gun to a store?

Here is the short list for our counter:

  • A photo ID. We record who each gun came from, so we need to see who you are.
  • The gun, unloaded. One gun or a whole safe. Keep it unloaded until it is on the counter.
  • The original box, magazines and accessories, if you still have them.

That is it. The appraisal is free when you want to sell, and there is no obligation. We use a national average calculation for that make and model, then agree the number with you before anything else happens. We may not buy every gun you bring, and we will say so up front. For the guns we do buy, you can take cash or put the value on a store account.

If you would rather weigh cash against store credit first, our post on selling or trading a gun walks through both.

Why we ask for ID, and whether you need a license

A licensed dealer has to keep a record of each firearm it takes in and who it came from. Federal regulations spell out what goes in that record, including the name and address of the person the gun came from (27 CFR 478.125). Your ID is how we fill that in correctly.

It is not a hurdle. It is the same step every licensed dealer takes.

Do you need a license to sell your own gun?

No. Federal law requires a license for people who are “engaged in the business” of dealing in firearms. The same law says a person who sells “all or part of his personal collection” is not engaged in the business (18 U.S.C. 921(a)(21)). Selling a gun you own, or a few of them, to a store is not the same as running a business.

ATF also says a person may transfer a firearm to a licensee in any state (ATF Firearms Q&A). So bringing a gun to a dealer in Cumming is an ordinary, lawful way to sell it. This is general information as of November 2026, not legal advice.

What else is worth bringing

None of this is required. All of it can save time at the counter.

The original box, magazines and accessories. A gun that comes with its box, spare magazines and the extras it shipped with is easier to appraise than the same gun bare. It can matter more on an older or collectible gun.

What you know about the gun. Write down the make and model, roughly when you bought it, and anything that has been changed or replaced, like new sights or a different trigger. If you added parts, tell us. It is a small thing that keeps the number fair.

The serial number. It is stamped on the gun, so we can read it at the counter. Having it written down also helps if you are selling several guns and want a clean list.

A rough idea of the number. A price in mind is optional. Our post on what a gun is worth explains how condition changes it.

Your questions. You should feel good about the number before you agree to it.

How to get the gun to the shop.

Unload it and case it for the drive. A hard case or a soft case both work, or even the box it came in. Keep it unloaded until it is on the counter, and tell us it is a gun you brought to sell as you walk in, so the counter is ready for you.

If you are bringing more than a few guns, or you have a question about one of them, reach out first through our contact page. We can answer before you load the car.

Guns that need a different plan

Most rifles, shotguns and handguns follow the steps above. A few items do not.

Suppressors and other NFA items. A suppressor, a short-barreled rifle or similar item is on the National Firearms Act registry. ATF’s NFA Handbook says an NFA item cannot be left with a dealer for consignment or safekeeping unless an approved transfer is in place first (NFA Handbook, Chapter 9). Do not bring one in to leave it. Call us first and we will tell you the steps. Our suppressor page covers how approvals work here.

Guns in an estate. If a family member died and left guns behind, you do not need to bring them all at once. Email a list of the firearms to info@lakesidemunitions.com, with serial numbers and details, and a price if you have one in mind. We can assess the collection, and you can bring the guns to the store or we can travel to locations in the Southeast. Our guide to inherited guns in Georgia covers the legal side, and our post on selling a gun collection covers making a list.

A gun that is not yours. Only bring a gun that is yours to sell. If you are not sure whose it is, ask us before you load the car.

What happens when you get here

Walk in with the gun cased and unloaded. Tell us you are there to sell, and we will take you to the counter. We look at the gun together. We check the condition, the make and model, and anything that came with it, then run a national average calculation and agree a number with you before anything else happens.

You choose from there, and there is no pressure to say yes. If the number is not what you hoped, you can take the gun home. Take cash for the guns we buy, or put the value on a store account toward something else. The appraisal is free when you want to sell. If you only want a number and have no plan to sell, say so when you arrive: an appraisal-only visit may carry a fee, depending on the time it takes.
