Your own ATF eForms account will not show your Form 4. The form is submitted by your dealer, so it lives in the dealer’s account. Once it is submitted, the best you will get is an “In Process” notice from ATF, then an approval email. If you bought through Silencer Shop, your order page there only tracks you up to the point the form goes to ATF. After that, the one place that can give you a status is ATF’s NFA Branch, by phone.
This post lays out what each source can and cannot tell you, so you know where to look and when to stop refreshing a page. It is general information, current as of November 2026.
Where your Form 4 shows, and where it does not
Here is the short version.
| Where you look | What you will see |
|---|---|
| Your personal ATF eForms account | Not your Form 4. It does not appear there |
| Your dealer’s ATF eForms account | The submitted form, but only the dealer can see it |
| Your Silencer Shop dashboard (My Orders) | Your step, and any missing information, up to the point the form goes to ATF |
| Your email | ATF’s “In Process” notice, then the approval |
The first row surprises people. Silencer Shop’s help center says, in its article on why you do not see a Form 4 in your eForms account, that the form appears only in the account of the submitter, your dealer, who files the application with ATF. The approval is “visible only to them on the ATF side.”
That is not a sign that something went wrong. It is how the system is set up.
Step one: your order page, until the form is filed
If you buy a suppressor through Silencer Shop, you can follow your order in the My Orders section of your Silencer Shop dashboard. According to its checklist for buying a suppressor, it shows which step you are on and flags any missing information.
The checklist lists the steps before filing: the photo, the fingerprints, choosing individual or trust, and signing the requests Silencer Shop emails you. The same checklist says your dealer completes the ATF submission once the suppressor arrives.
Silencer Shop’s wait-time page is clear about the limit. You can track your order in your dashboard until the form is submitted to ATF. After the form is certified, Silencer Shop has no update access.
Step two: the “In Process” notice
Once your submission is underway, Silencer Shop’s checklist says you will get an “In Process” notification from ATF eForms. That tells you ATF has the application. It is not an approval, and it does not give a date.
Step three: the approval email
When ATF approves a Form 4, it emails the approval to you and to the dealer you picked. Silencer Shop’s help article on who gets the approval notice says Silencer Shop is not notified. It relies on the dealer to confirm the approval and tell you when the suppressor is ready.
If you want to keep your approval on file, Silencer Shop says you can upload it to your dashboard under the Tax Stamp Wallet.
The item cannot be transferred to you until ATF approves the Form 4. Silencer Shop says so in its own article on current wait times, and that ATF alone sets how long it takes.
Who to call for a real status
If the form has been filed and you want a status, Silencer Shop’s wait-time page gives a direct answer. It says to call ATF’s NFA Branch at (304) 616-4500.
When you call, have your application details ready. It also helps to know which step you last saw. If your Silencer Shop order page shows that you are done and the dealer has filed the form, you are in the stage where only ATF can answer. If it still shows a missing item, such as a photo or fingerprints, fix that first, because nothing moves until it is complete.
For how long the wait usually is, ATF publishes its own numbers on its current processing times page. Silencer Shop’s page showed these figures on November 7, 2026, for eForm 4 approvals in the last 30 days:
| Filing type | Median wait | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | 3 days | 1 to 28 days |
| Trust | 3 days | 1 to 20 days |
Silencer Shop also says eForm 4 approvals are currently “finalized within 3-10 days.” These are one company’s own numbers across its customers, not a promise for your form.
What to do while you wait
Waiting is the hardest part, so here is a short list of what helps.
- Keep the email address on your account working. ATF sends the “In Process” notice and the approval there.
- Do not expect Silencer Shop to tell you about approval. Its help center says it is not notified, so your dealer is the one to confirm.
- When the approval arrives, you can upload it to your Silencer Shop dashboard under the Tax Stamp Wallet to keep it in one place.
- Do not plan on taking the suppressor home before approval. The item cannot be transferred to you until ATF approves the Form 4.
- Call the shop before you come to pick up, so the suppressor is ready when you arrive.
That last point is a small thing, but it saves a wasted trip.
What we see at our counter
Our own numbers are a little different, because they come from the customers who buy here. Right now, individual filings are running 2 to 3 days, and they can take up to 21 days. A trust can take up to a month. We tell you where the wait stands before you pay.
A few days to a few weeks matches the ranges above. If you are well past the top of the range, that is a good time to ask us, or to call the NFA Branch.
What happens after approval
Once you have the approval, the next step is a standard background check form at the dealer. We explain how Form 4 and the regular gun form differ in our post on Form 4473 vs Form 4. And before you pick up your suppressor, call the shop first so we can make sure it is ready, as Silencer Shop’s checklist also advises.
For a longer look at wait times, see our guide to Form 4 wait times. If you are still deciding where to begin, our suppressor page covers the whole process in Georgia, and our post on the Silencer Shop kiosk covers the in-store steps.
